Frequently Asked Questions

SAFETY

Please excuse the long answer, I like to give both sides so you can make choice that feels best for you & your baby!

The official FDA-sanctioned answer is that Rasa is not safe for either pregnancy or breastfeeding. There is just not enough information about several of our herbs for it to meet FDA criteria for safety.

HOWEVER. The FDA is simply not as familiar with some of our herbs as Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda—the traditions that these herbs hail from—are. These traditions have investigated these herbs in practical daily life application for hundreds, even thousands of years.

I actually co-created Rasa when I was breastfeeding my first son at 5 months old. I wanted something that would help me cope with the stressors of motherhood, and provide more sustainable energy than coffee could.

The Rasa formula was expertly crafted by an herbalist, & I had it run by 4 other very experienced herbalists with decades in their fields, including a Chinese Medicine practitioner. They all saw no major contraindications, including pregnancy or breastfeeding. The two primary Ayurvedic herbs in our formula, ashwagandha & shatavari, are frequently *prescribed* during pregnancy and to help support healthy lactation.

Here’s a fun & illustrative contradiction, though: the FDA says ashwagandha is NOT safe for pregnancy or breastfeeding, while Ayurveda practitioners will often *prescribe* it during these times! There was a study indicating that ashwagandha can cause abortion...at EXTREMELY high doses in rats. You won’t get even close to that even drinking large quantities of Rasa! At normal therapeutic doses, Ayurveda actually recommends ashwagandha to help prevent miscarriage.

Anecdotally, I nursed my now 3-year old for 2 years while drinking Rasa regularly, and drunk it most days during my recent pregnancy, and still drink it while nursing my 8 month old. That babe is probably 30% Rasa. :) Both babes are ludicrously healthy!

That said: ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND YOUR BABY. I personally felt almost repulsed by Rasa in my first trimester, so I didn’t drink it! From second trimester on, I craved it and drank it plentifully :) f you have a complicated pregnancy, maybe best to wait. If your baby has a very sensitive digestive system, maybe best to wait. If you feel unsure...maybe best to wait!

I’m giving you all perspectives that I know so you can make the decision for yourself using your own (& your healthcare practitioner's) wisdom.

I also did a podcast where I discuss this more at length, check it out at 21:30 for more detail on using (or not using) adaptogens in general during pregnancy and breastfeeding!

This is one of those personal mama-judgment questions! The Rasa formula is a gentle, nourishing blend, designed to be balanced and safe for most people, most of the time. Because these are whole-herbs and not potentized extracts (such as a 10:1 extract), it should be fine for children. But nothing is a one-size-fits-all! You know your children best. If you choose to share Rasa with your children, keep the dosage small and age appropriate. Sometimes I’ll serve my 3 year old a splash of Rasa with a bunch more almond milk. He loves it! If he’s taking a sip from my cup, he usually only has one or two sips, and that seems totally fine for him.

Keep an eye on your little(s) and if you notice anything unusual, maybe it’s not a good fit for them at this time. The main two symptoms I’d be on the lookout for is possible hyperactivity (there are a couple of stimulating herbs in Rasa) or loose stools (several of the herbs are detoxifying). Little bodies are more sensitive so they may notice these herbs more than our bodies do! But they may also be *just fine.* It’s your call, mama!

Higher mycotoxin levels are found in tropical/sub-tropical regions (i.e. coffee & ginger). Our ingredients are not generally from these regions, and so are not susceptible to mycotoxins. Also, all the Rasa herbs are tested for yeasts and mold. In addition, the Rasa herbs are steam-treated to prevent potential biological contaminants.

Good question!

SSRI & MAOI: None of the herbs in Rasa are contraindicated with SSRI or MAOI antidepressants.

Other medications: Because Rasa is a well-balanced and gentle formula (i.e. not a 10:1 extract of a single herb), there's very little risk of interaction with most drugs. However, if you are on a specific medication and are concerned, it is always advisable to speak with your healthcare practitioner to be sure!

Heck yes! At the Rasa Casa (yes, we are total dweebs and we actually call it that :), we are often known to drink 2-4 cups a day. Because Rasa is a well-balanced and gentle formula (i.e. not a 10:1 extract of a single herb), there's little risk with drinking too much!

But of course, always always always listen to your body! Every body is different. If it feels like too much Rasa….it probably is! I once drank 10 cups in a day (it was a big event, and I just kept guzzling), and I swear to you my vision changed...it was actually fun, but I also knew I’d hit my limit! :)

We did have the formula run by 4 herbalists, and literally asked the question, “What if people drink 20 cups a day?” The herbalists all felt that the biggest risk was loose stools, because several of the herbs in Rasa are gently detoxifying.

But again: LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! The body knows, and it speaks! 💛

If Rasa punched you in the face, please put it on Time Out and contact us IMMEDIATELY because that is a very unusual bag of Rasa and we must investigate thoroughly, and probably get it in tabloids STAT!

Otherwise...It sounds like you’ve had what is known as an “idiosyncratic reaction” to one of the herbs in Rasa. This means that it’s not a common symptom associated with the herb, you’re just special! 😉 Occasionally, the chemistry of an herb + the chemistry of your body is just not a good fit, and as much as we have done our very best to make Rasa a blend that would be healthy and nourishing for most people, most of the time...every body is different!

Our return policy is that if you ask nicely, we’re happy to give you a refund within 30 days. Please visit https://rasakoffee.com/a/returns and type in your order number (in the format #RK_____) and the email address you placed your order with, and you will be guided through a couple simple steps to get a return label sent to you. Once your Rasa arrives at our HQ, your refund will be automatically applied to your card.

Thank you so much for trying Rasa, and wishing you a WONDERFUL day!

PRODUCT INFORMATION

While we are not Certified Gluten-Free, Rasa contains no grains (like many other coffee alternative products) or gluten-containing ingredients, and is produced in a 100% gluten-free facility.

Each of the herbs we use are certified kosher, and Rasa is produced in a kosher facility. We will be obtaining Scroll K certification on our products starting in January 2019. If you require Kosher-certified Rasa, PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF IT in your order notes. We will at that time have both certified and non-certified stock and want to make sure we get you the right one! :)

We are freaks about organic, just like you! We will ONLY ever use certified organic ingredients. Forever. Full-stop. We are in the process of obtaining Organic certification from CCOF. Depending on how the bureaucratic process goes ;) we’ll have OG certification in just a few months! (written on Oct 25, 2018)

We are SO proud to share that yes, all of our bags are compostable, in your backyard or commercial facilities. We have worked very hard to make this possible! We wish this was the industry standard, but the truth is, it just isn’t, yet, and we need companies like us to do the extra work to make it happen! Please note that the securing tin-tie needs to be removed and thrown away or, even better, reused.

Original Rasa (Whole or Ground), has zero caffeine. The gentle stimulation you might feel comes from two of our amazing adaptogenic herbs, eleuthero and rhodiola. In addition, several of the other herbs in Rasa work to build your long-term deep stores of energy, so the longer and more consistently you drink it, the more stable energy you’ll have, day in and day out.

Launching in late Nov, Cacao Rasa has just a teensy bit of caffeine (< 5 mg). Dirty Rasa, which has actual coffee, has 25 mg of caffeine (about ¼ a standard 5 oz cup of coffee) for an 8 oz cup. Yes, we measure our cups in 8 oz, whereas the coffee industry measures theirs in 5 oz! So if you’ve been drinking 8 oz cups and thinking you were getting 100 mg caffeine...it’s actually more like 160 mg! If you brew Dirty Rasa double-strong, an 8 oz cup will have 50 mg of caffeine.

Magic! OK, well, actually, not quite. Two of the herbs in Rasa are classic endurance and energizing herbs: rhodiola and eleuthero. Rhodiola is often used by athletes to support peak performance, and eleuthero is often used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a remedy to support adrenal health. Interestingly, eleuthero still energizes through the adrenals, but much differently than coffee does. Coffee activates a cortisol release, which makes you feel awesome but also puts your body into a “fight or flight” state. Eleuthero tonifies and strengthens the adrenals, so the energy actually comes more from within and from your body getting stronger, as opposed to via a stress response.

We are so glad you asked! We love to gush on (and on) about these amazing herbal allies!

If you just want a quick tour, scroll down our homepage and you can tap on the herbs to see their benefits-in-brief!

Currently, all of our products contain cinnamon. Cinnamon is a wonderful herb for both blood sugar balance and circulation, and that circulatory power of cinnamon helps the constituents of the other herbs to get deeper into your body! (Every herb in Rasa has a distinct functional benefit and purpose!)

HOWEVER. We only use Ceylon cinnamon. The vast majority of people who have a cinnamon sensitivity have that sensitivity because of the coumarin content of most cinnamon. Cassia, the most common cinnamon used (& actually not “true” cinnamon) has 1% coumarin content, while Ceylon has .004% (250x less!!) Many people who are sensitive to cinnamon can actually tolerate Ceylon just fine!

That may not be the issue for you, but just in case it is, we want to be sure you know! We made the change from Cassia to Ceylon at the suggestion of a customer...so please always feel free to send us your suggestions, we take them to heart!

First of all, good on you and godspeed with your protocol! Autoimmune issues are no walk in the park and we wish you all the best in your path to healing!

Sorry to be a bummer, but all of our products currently contain ashwagandha. Ashwagandha is such a powerful nervine tonic and adaptogenic herb, and it feels like such perfect medicine for today’s frazzled AF world!

One thing to consider regarding ashwagandha, though, is that it actually acts as an immunomodulator, as opposed to a strict immuno-stimulator. This means that its adaptogenic properties also extend to the immune system—it doesn’t strictly stimulate the immune system if that’s not what your body needs to for homeostasis! If your immune system is overactive, it can actually act to help bring it back into balance. For this reason, some people on AIP may actually tolerate ashwagandha fine.

Of course, do what is right for your body! You know you best! We just want to give you as much information as we have so you are empowered to make the best choice for you.

Because many of the herbs in Rasa are adaptogens, they’ll affect everyone a little differently! We get some customers who *only* drink Rasa at night, while others find it too stimulating to drink after dark. We recommend you try it in the daytime first, and then in the afternoon, and then see! We do find that many people say Rasa improves the quality of their sleep (gotta love that ashwagandha!)—we hope it supports you in that way, too!

When it comes to our herbs, we believe in relationships. Relationships with our growers and wildcrafters, with the regions and cultures our plants call home, and most importantly, with the medicines themselves. Because of this we buy herbs differently than most, resulting in potent, pure, and sustainable product offerings.

We’re committed to staying 100% organic, continuously improving our sustainability and testing, sourcing directly from traditional growing regions, and promoting quality herbal education.

Our Chinese Herbs come from one of the most respected organic herb suppliers in China. Several of our Chinese herbs come from the largest nature preserve in China, the famed Changbai Mountain, and are highly regulated for both environmental sustainability and purity.

Our Ayurvedic herbs come from small organic farm cooperatives in India. Our chicory is from a family farm & roaster in France (they’ve been roasting chicory since the 1800s!), and our mushrooms are sustainably cultivated in California (we use only chaga mycelium instead of wildcrafted chaga for sustainability reasons.)

All of our herbs are organic and are tested for heavy metals and other possible contaminants. Thanks again for your thoughtful question, it’s always wonderful when people care enough to ask where our herbs come from!

BREWING

The formulas are completely the same, one is just ground into almost a powder and the other has the herbs in larger pieces. It’s all a difference of user experience!

Ground Rasa brews like coffee in a:

  • French press (10-15 mins)
  • Espresso machine
  • Aeropress
  • Keurig (with reusable K-cups)
  • Moka pot
  • Percolator
  • Tea infuser or disposable tea bag (Just be sure to cover the mug while it brews so the water stays as hot as possible!)

Whole Rasa must be simmered, covered, on the stove & strained—great for making big batches!—OR ground and brewed like Ground Rasa.

Either form of Rasa can be rebrewed for better value! Just add another tbsp fresh dry Rasa to the used herbs and brew a longer second time.

Rasa makes GREAT espresso, you’re in for a treat! Just be sure to use only 1 tbsp of Rasa in the portafilter, DO NOT TAMP, and then brew a DOUBLE-double (yep, that’s two double shots!) The herbs in Rasa brew differently than coffee does so it needs this extra little bit of attention! We do find that it can take a time or two to find the exact right process for your tastes and your machine, so if it’s not perfect the first time, please give it another try!

Rasa can be brewed in a Keurig using reusable K-cups (which we conveniently have available for you right here). Just be sure to use no more than 1 tbsp of Rasa in the cup, and then brew it on the strongest setting. We do find that it can take a time or two to find the exact right process for your tastes and your machine, so if it’s not perfect the first time, please give it another try! We have many happy folks for whom Keurig is their primary way of making Rasa!

Heck yes! Either form of Rasa can be rebrewed for better value! Just add a little more fresh dry Rasa to the used herbs and brew for longer the second time. We recommend using ¼ of the original amount of Rasa you used (so if you brewed a full French press with 4 tbsp, add 1 tbsp fresh dry Rasa to the spent herbs).

And be sure to compost the Rasa grounds afterward! Plants love them. 🌿😍

Unfortunately, we do not recommend these methods for brewing Rasa. The roots and mushrooms in Rasa need some solid time in hot water to extract the good stuff (heh, like most of us 😏), and these methods just don’t do them justice! We want you to get the most benefit possible out of your Rasa!

Don’t have any of those? Whole Rasa might be a good choice for you!

Whole Rasa can be simmered on the stove & strained with any fine mesh strainer. Whole Rasa is great for making big batches! You can store batches in the fridge in a sealed container for up to a week for easy cold (or re-heated) Rasa all week long.

If you want cold Rasa, that’s easy, just takes a little forethought. You can brew a big batch of Whole Rasa on the stove, strain with any fine mesh strainer, and store in the fridge in a sealed container for up to a week for easy cold Rasa all week long.

Or you can make up a batch of Ground Rasa and do the same thing...or, brew it double strong and pour over ice.

Rasa is dark, rich, and roasty, and stands up to milk like coffee does...but it doesn’t taste exactly like coffee—at least I don’t think so, & I’m the founder! We do get some customers who think it does... 🤷🏼‍Coffee is it’s own magical thing and we’ll never use “natural flavors” or any of that malarkey to get it to taste like something it isn’t! If you want something that DOES taste just like coffee and has all the benefits of adaptogens, we’ve got a Dirty Rasa (with actual coffee!) coming out late November. And we get many customers who will put a splash of coffee or decaf in Rasa—even a tiny bit really goes a long way there!

Original Rasa is dark, rich, & roasty. Some people say it tastes just like coffee, many others think it has a flavor of its own (I tend to agree!) But it stands up to milk like coffee does, and it has a complex flavor. It has a little bitter, like coffee, and an earthiness (it is made with 9 roots, after all!) with a little bit of nuttiness and just a hint of cinnamon.

Like coffee, most people prefer Rasa with something creamy—myself included! It’s also delicious Bulletproof-style, ie blended with healthy fats (we call it the Phatty Rasa :)

Cacao Rasa tastes dark and rich like Rasa, but with a deep cacao flavor from French-roasted criollo cacao beans.

Dirty Rasa has a smooth, balanced, slightly sweet coffee taste. You honestly can’t tell that it’s any different than normal coffee, even though it’s packed with herbs that are amazing for you!

SHIPPING & ORDERING

Aw, darn you, USPS! We have found that it is quite common for them to preemptively mark a package as delivered. It is also common for USPS to leave packages with your neighbors. They really want to foster neighborhood community, 😏and we love community, but unfortunately it’s a pain for everyone involved. 🙄 Please check in with your neighbors and wait a couple more delivery days to see if your Rasa shows up. We promise that 99% of the time, the Rasa really does get delivered! However, if your Rasa still does not appear, let us know and we are happy to send another package your way.

We do our shipping in-house, so we can add a little actual love (& occasional goodies and freebies!) to your Rasa shipment. We do our shipping on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week. So if you order on Wednesday evening, then your order will be shipped on Friday morning. Shipping takes 2-5 business days, depending on where in the US you are. International shipping times vary greatly, but Rasa generally arrives to Canada within 1 week, and to the EU within 1-2 weeks, and beyond, within 2-3 weeks. If you’re ordering from Canada, we recommend buying Rasa from Amazon Canada to be sure to avoid customs duties!

We ship anywhere! International shipping is $12.99US. We are not responsible for customs charges you may incur.

Rasa is not responsible for paying fees or rates charged by customs. Sorry! We’re a startup, we unfortunately can’t afford it! It’s your responsibility to pay customs fees.

If you refuse to accept your package at customs due to high customs fees, we are not responsible for refunding that order or reshipping the order via another carrier. The package will be abandoned at customs. If you want a refund on your order, you are responsible for paying the customs fee to ship the package back to us. As such, once the package is received back at our warehouse, you will be credited for the cost of your order minus the original shipping charge and minus the customs charge to send the package back to us (if you haven't paid it yet).

Rasa is not responsible for reshipping orders that are refused at customs. If customs refuses a package, sends it back to us, and we receive it back from customs, we can issue you a refund for the order only if we receive the package back and if the contents are in sellable condition.

In the event the package is not returned to us by customs or is lost in transit, we cannot issue you a refund. We are not responsible for paying for the package to be returned to us or for reimbursing the customer for that cost.

International orders/shipments may be subject to the possible opening of packages and inspection of goods by customs officials in the country of delivery.

Rasa is not responsible for orders that are held up at customs, damaged by customs, or refused entrance by customs due to this process.

PLEASE NOTE: Possible custom and duty charges are more likely for Canadian customers. Wanna skip customs? Order Rasa on Amazon Canada
