Beta-huh? A glossary of potentially confusing mushroom terms:
🍄 Extracted: In addition to condensed strength, extraction allows your body to actually utilize the important properties of these wonderful mushrooms. If you grind up a whole mushroom (as, cough cough, many companies do) and toss it in a bag, you’re not accounting for... chitin. This pesky compound is found in the cell walls of mushrooms. Chitin is hard and indigestible and effectively locks up all the beneficial compounds we want, so when you extract the mushrooms, you can unlock all its prized properties. Huzzah!
🍄 Dual extracted: Some mushrooms in this blend benefit from dual extraction, meaning they are extracted in both water, which extracts beta-glucans, and in alcohol, which extracts things like adaptogenic triterpenoids. Instead of only extracting mushrooms in water, dual extraction makes sure we get all the beneficial compounds (because #fomo).
🍄 Beta-Glucans: Beta-glucans are complex compounds that have profound immunomodulating properties. While all mushrooms have their individual chemistry—cordyceps has cordicepin, reishi has triterpenoids, etc.—beta-glucans are in all medicinal mushrooms and are what account for the majority of mushrooms' impact on our immune system.
🍄 Fruiting bodies: Fruiting bodies is another name for mushrooms. What we harvest, what we eat, what we think of as mushrooms—this is the fruiting body. Mycelium on the other hand is the invisible below-ground network of fungal threads that produce these fruiting bodies. The fruiting body consistently demonstrates higher levels of beta-glucans and has been used for thousands of years (use of mycelium is a much more recent phenomenon).
